The ENCR was established in 1989 within the framework of the ‘Europe Against Cancer’ programme of the European Commission.

The Network has the following objectives:
DOT to improve the quality, comparability and availability of cancer incidence data,
DOT to create a basis for monitoring cancer incidence and mortality in the European Union,
DOT to provide regular information on the burden of cancer in Europe,
DOT to promote the use of cancer registries in cancer control, health-care planning and research.

The project was supported by the European Commission (SANCO) until 31 March 2004.

The EUNICE application submitted in 2004 to the new EC Public Health Programme has been favourably reviewed and is currently being negotiated. An application for funding of a European Cancer Observatory submitted to Cancéropôle Rhône-Alpes has been successful. This project covers some of the activities of ENCR, ACCIS and CaMon and started in 2005.

The ENCR is governed by the Steering Committee.
